A variety of contributing factors have been identified in causing Carpal Tunnel, but no single factor has ever been firmly identified as the ‘smoking gun’.
Most likely is that the development of the painful symptoms come from the presence in your life of one or more contributing factors.
Here’s what to look out for:
Work Related Factors
Many of us immediately suspect that our occupations can contribute to the development of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. In particular work that involves the repetitive use of heavily vibrating machinery or tools.
An effective stretching regime is recommended to avoid this, as well as using an effective wrist brace if you do need to operate heavy machinery.
Body Fluids Build-Up
The Carpal Tunnel is just as it’s name suggests – a tunnel. Medical or life-stage conditions that cause the build-up of fluids can cause pressure within the tunnel. Typically this might involve pregnancy or menopause.
Gender Related Issues
Especially with the connection to pregnancy, it comes as no surprise that women are more prone to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome than men. This is increased by the fact that the structure of the tunnel itself is smaller in the wrists of women than men. This smaller structure creates a greater risk of pressure build-up, and it’s pressure that is the greatest cause of the condition.
Medical & Inflammatory Conditions
Any medical conditions that cause inflammation, and in particular rheumatoid arthritis will increase the risk of developing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Other medical problems suspected to be contributory factors are conditions of the thyroid and kidneys, diabetes, and being overweight.
Early Diagnosis is Important
The good news is that several treatments are available. They key is to having your issue correctly diagnosed as soon as you detect the symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
